Mallorca has been basking in glorious sunshine for the past couple of weeks and on Sunday the 24 February we similarly had gorgeous blue skies and a warm sun for the second Rally of 2019, the Llucmajor to Alfabia Classic Car Run. The good weather brought out many enthusiastic members for the rally. In all we had 31 cars and more than 60 people in attendance. The rally was organised by Gaston Westphal and it was evident he had put in an enormous amount of work preparing the route and the questions.
Everyone met at the Poligono Son Noguera, just off Junction 22 and our first test was getting the driver of each car and their co-driver to steer their vehicle in a line to a point where the front wheel would gingerly knock over a small stack of cans. So, before the rally had started, points were being awarded for those who were successful.
Once the fun and stress of the first task was out of the way, cars were then instructed to leave the parking area and follow the Ma 6020 to the Llucmajor entrance roundabout and from there we headed for Santanyi and Porreres. There was an interesting twist here, in that Gaston had asked us to recall an American cigarette trademark and decide if the image was a camel or a dromedary. If the decision was a camel (with 2 humps) then at the Porreres roundabout you had to follow the signs for Vilafranca del Bonany – if you thought it was a dromedary (with one hump) then head for Montuiri. Points were awarded for taking the correct route (to Montuiri).
Gaston’s route then got us all together again at the Ma15 Palma to Manacor road and from there we were treated to some spectacular scenery and a series of interesting places. From the top of the mountain at Ermita de San Miquel to a small village called Cas Canar, we saw a bar that made traditional Belgium beer and the co-drivers got to sample it! Across the road from the bar was a strange tall pole made up of over 15 signs pointing in different directions with the names of individual beers and how far they were from this pole.
We also took in Binisslem, Consell and enjoyed some dazzling scenery on the way to Bunyola and Soller, finally arriving at the restaurant S’hort, where we all enjoyed a fabulous three course meal. All in all, a challenging but very enjoyable rally. A big thank you to Gaston for organising every aspect of the rally.
The winners were Elmar and Irene Buschman, second place went to Malocm Kelliher and his co-pilot John Watson and third place Pierre and Nicole Bonjour.
Many thanks go to Peo Stenberg and Gaston Westphal for these wonderful photos!
