The Early Summer Car Run
25 May 2024
The latest car rally was organised by Stan Hunter and took place on Saturday the 25 May 2024. It was entitled ‘The Early Summer Run’ and, as befits the name, the weather was gloriously sunny and warm, perfect for the car run. A total of 20 cars and 41 people attended the car run, which was just over a 60kms drive that took in some dramatic scenery along narrow and challenging roads. It was also the Annual General Meeting (AGM), which brought members up to date with events and activities that took place in 2023.

The start of the meeting took place at Café Amadip in Palmanova at 10.30am with coffee and croissants provided. The AGM completed its statutory business and then in Any Other Business (AOB), three of the committee members announced they were standing down at the next AGM in 2025. The committee members were: Pam Gardner, (President) Stan Hunter (Secretary) and Helen Pitt (Treasurer) and each said they were proud to have served the Club, but felt it needed a fresh input. Special praise was rightly given to Helen Pitt who has done so much more than manage the finances, a point that was recognised by all the members present.

The AGM finished at 10.55am and shortly after, everyone was given their car run instructions, and then headed from Palmanova to Portals Nous to start the run.

The car run went on to Bendinat and from there took the motorway (Ma-20), coming off at Junction 5 and picking up the Ma-1016, which has the military barracks and is a challenging road. This road is often used by the major car rallies that take place on the island, principally because it is narrow with many sharp twists and turns along the way.

From there the route directed everyone to the Ma-1016 heading for Calvia village. They then headed to Es Capdella on the Ma-1015, and then Andratx on the Ma-1031. From Andrtax they drove to Port Andratx (Ma-10), and then picked up the coast road, the Ma-1020 and the Ma-1, heading for the Mallorca Country Club in Santa Ponsa, driving through Paguera on the way.

The route had some stunning scenery and took members along roads that they would not normally have driven on, chiefly the Ma-1016, which is not an easy road to drive. However, members said they enjoyed the challenge and were blessed with glorious weather. The beautiful blue sky, which acted as a backdrop to the lush green foliage of the countryside, made the car run even more pleasurable.

The end of the car run was at the Mallorca Country Club in Santa Ponsa, which laid on a delicious three course meal with unlimited wine and coffee, which was enjoyed by all.

Virtually everyone answered the questions correctly (naming things on signs), so a tie break question separated the winners. In first place was Wolfgang and Daniela Eberhardt, driving an Audi, in second place were Alan and Linda Walker, driving a Triumph TR4 and in third place were Vincent and Miriam Linari driving an Alfa Romeo. Congratulations to all the winners.

A big thank you to Stan Hunter for organising this car run.
