3 POINT DRIVE CAR RUN 26 FEBRUARY 2023
February 2023 Car Run was organised by Gaston Westphal, which he called the ‘3 Point Drive’, and it took in a number of towns that were East of Palma airport. A total of 40 people attended, with around 20 cars and because of the fine, sunny weather, several cars had their hoods down. We also had two new members, Dennis and Debbie in their Fiat 500 taking part and also hopefully members to be Albert and partner in their Mercedes 190E. We would like to warmly welcome them to the Club and hope to see them on more Car Runs.
We all met at Son Bonet airport where coffee and croissants were available. Just prior to starting the Car Run, Gaston asked all cars to drive a circuit of the airport in as close to 40 seconds, which was designed to separate the winners in case of a tie. As it was, 5 cars ended up winning, so the times achieved by each car proved crucial in deciding the winners!
The route took us from Son Bonet airport to Marratxinet, then to Santa Eugenia and onto Montuiri. From there we took the MA15 to Vilafranca de Bonay, then south from there to Porreres, via Pina with a short stop at a Finca Son Valls, north of Felanitx. The finca dates back to 1597 and boasts an impressive large sundial on an outside wall, which Gaston had asked us to photograph. We were also asked to answer three questions, one of which was a picture of the letter ‘H’, showing an arrow moving through it from left to right, with the year 1967. We discovered it was representing the year when Sweden changed from driving on the left to driving on the right!
Just a short drive south of Porreres took us to our final destination, the restaurant Santauri Montision. The restaurant is housed in an old sanctuary dating back to the 1400’s, and it had an extraordinary atmosphere. The views were also spectacular from the high elevation and was a fantastic photo shoot of our wonderful cars parked outside, Gaston made some great pictures with his drone. We all enjoyed a delicious three course meal with drinks included served by very helpful smiling staff who later loved coming to see our cars. We had a few extra people turn up that had not booked their meals beforehand which caused a little confusion and would like to just ask that you do make reservations by the website or just text message to let us know you are coming so we can be prepared at the restaurant for the numbers booked.
On completion of the meal the winners were then announced. Of the 5 winners, the three closest to the 40 second circuit run in Son Bonet were, in third place: Pedro and Ann Alomar; in second place were Stan Hunter and Pam Gardner, and the winners were Alan and Linda Walker. Congratulations to the winners.
