The UK’s former Prime Minister, Harold Wilson famously said, “a week in politics is a long time” and this could equally be applied to Mallorca’s weather, where a week ago temperatures dropped to around 10 degrees with wind and rain. Just a week later, in time for Nick Scantlebury’s rally run, temperatures topped 20 degrees with beautiful blue skies. This encouraged a large turnout of nearly 30 cars with many opting for an open top ride.
It was also the Annual General Meeting of the Classic Car Club where Pam Gardner, the President, officiated one of the quickest meetings on record. Pam was able to report on another successful year for the Club with a growing number of members. Indeed, three new members attended the Rally and were welcomed: Alex and Steff Fleming, Hans-Jurgen, Kersten and Felix Fabritius and Simon and Agnieszka Williams. Finally, Paul Staff was welcomed onto the committee, as a German speaking member.
Nick’s rally run was entitled: ‘The Big Yankee Run’ and required us to meet at quite a unique venue, the Rock Bar Restaurant called ‘Los Ultimas Mohicanos’ not far from Son Gual. This is a favourite haunt for petrol heads, not of the car kind but of the motorcycle kind!
The Run started at 11.00am with cars following a very pleasant route that took in Llucmajor, Porreres, Campos, then across the North of Palma through Genova and then onto Andratx. We all enjoyed a fabulous lunch at the Club de Vela restaurant on the sea front in the Port of Andratx.
Nick’s run also involved answering several questions, all related to American cars and American car companies, in order to establish the winners of the Rally. It was hotly contested but the winners were Nick and Lou Cutler, in second place were Robert & Jane Klevenhagen and in third place were Pedro and Ann Alomar – congratulations everyone.
A big thank you to Nick for organising such a great rally and for arranging the superb lunch venue – it was warmly enjoyed by all. Also, a big thank you to Jim Bell for taking the photographs.
