The Two Bays Drive Car Run

Saturday, 29 March 2025

Organiser: Gaston Westphal

This month’s (March 2025) Car Run was organised by Gaston Westphal and was called The Two Bays Drive.  As always, Gaston designed an interesting and challenging drive with many twists and turns that was varied and full of surprises. The car run explored the Northeast of the island and took us to areas that many had never explored before.

The drive took place on Saturday 29 March 2025, and we met at Restaurant & Tafona Son Catiu, just off the Ma-3440, East of Inca and 3.8kms West of Llubi.  It was a gorgeous, sunny morning, slightly windy, but still perfect for taking an open top car along delightful Mallorca roads.  A total of 21 cars turned up for the car run, with 41 people in attendance.

Gaston handed out the route at just gone 11am and gave out brief instructions and right from the start we were asked to play a domino game and answer a question about fridges and car manufacturers.  So, points were awarded (or not!) before we had driven the car out of the parking area to start the car run!  This was to avoid a tie at the end.

The route was in three sections.  The first section started from the Restaurant & Tafona Son Catiu and headed to Can Picafort.  We drove on the Ma-3440 to Santa Margalida and then on the Ma-3400 to the east coast picking up the Ma-12 heading north to Can Picafort.

The second section of the drive took us from Can Picafort to Alcanada.  From Can Picafort we came inland and made our way to Sa Pobla on the Ma-3431 and Ma- 3430 and then picked up the Ma-3433 driving east to Alcudia and Alcanada, driving through the Albufera region. This section of the route is a beautiful part of the island, where we drove through the Parc Natural de s’Albufera.  We stopped at Alcanada and stretched our legs and walked to Platja d’Alcanada and got to see the Alcanada Lighthouse on Far d’Aucanada, a small island visible from the beach.  We were asked three questions on this section of the route.

The third and final section of the run took us from Alcanada to the restaurant Can Josep not far from Port de Pollenca with a further two questions to answer.  We started off on the Ma-3460 and along the way we did a detour to Ermita de la Victoria, a beautiful area that has the Victoria Watchtower, which is 445 metres above sea level.  It is a baroque chapel, originally built in the 14th century and has an impressive sundial placed high on the side of the building.  One of the questions was to report the time on the sundial when we got there. From Ermita de la Victoria we picked up the Ma-2220 and headed along the coast road for the Can Josep Restaurant situated on the outskirts of Port de Pollenca.

The route provided us with some spectacular and memorable views of Mallorca, taking in some interesting and new roads and sights. There was a lot of driving along the east coast roads, with sea views and sea air washing over us.  This, combined with the sun that shone for most of the route, made this a very pleasurable and refreshing car run.

The finish was at the restaurant C’an Josep in Port de Pollenca, which is on the coast road, giving us fantastic views of the Bay of Pollenca. The three-course meal was superb, with four tapas starters, a choice of five main courses and a delicious dessert, plus wine, beer and coffee.  All in all, an excellent day out not just for our classic cars but for the drivers and co-drivers as well.

There were outright winners this time, so no need for a tie breaker question to separate the winners.  In third place was Bernado and Gabriela (BMW 320 Cabrio), in second place were Andy and Sadie Sutherland (MGA) and in first place was Alisdair and Nancy Galbraith (Porsche 356).  Congratulations to all the winners.

A big thank you to Gaston for organising such a wonderful car run and for organising the superb restaurant.
